The 1.8-mile Durham Rail Trail will serve as a new pedestrian and bicycle corridor that links neighborhoods, businesses, parking and residents to the evolving downtown and nightlife. The proposed amenities will include overlook views to urban and open space vistas, vegetated parklike character with site furniture, cultural public art displays, programmable urban opportunities and connection to adjacent developments. In addition, the trail corridor reclaims a portion of the unused Norfolk and Southern rail bed that connects Avondale Ave in North Durham to the Durham Station multimodal transportation hub.
The design process prioritizes community engagement while collaborating with federal, state and City departments to develop a coordinated design solution. Developing the trail program into a final design will consider wellness, economic impacts, sustainable practices, community connectivity, safety, security and cultural identity. Currently the schematic design demonstrates the ongoing team effort to create a collaborative, comprehensive design solution.
